The biggest lesson that motherhood has taught me is to give more grace. I have learned to let go of this idea that I’m going to be a perfect mother. I’m going to make mistakes. I’m going to fail. Really great things happen when I can forgive myself for that, or ask for my kids’ forgiveness when I need to. The reality was, I couldn't. I was too overwhelmed, too overworked, too overscheduled. I had become responsible for too much. There was literally no way I was going to be able to do it all. So like a frozen yogurt of responsibility, the tasks, and events, and commitments kept swirling around and around me until I was totally covered by soft-serve, sticky bullshit. For International Women’s Day, and Women’s History Month, instead of recapping, or analyzing, or storybooking the past, I decided to talk to some incredibly wonderful and independent women I know now for this post. I also included some of my own comments too -- for good measure 😍.

What first drew me to the Caden sisters. Sisterpeneurs and founders of Belly Bandit and Proof created two mission-based companies. Their mission: to design garments and underwear for women tired of feeling insecure after giving birth, wanting to be confident in the face of unexpected leaks, and needing to feel good about their bodies. Both companies were the product (no pun intended) of real-life challenges!

2020 was a year of chaotic change, and 2021 will be the year of intentional transition. Things will continue changing for us on a local, national, and global scale, and it's up to all of us to be open and ready for those transitions. I am taking that mentality to heart both personally and professionally, which I believe deeply will be the key to success for this coming year and years to come. I had my daughter in 2016 and realized there were not many swimwear options that were both premium quality and eco-conscious. I wanted to create a brand that had the colors, prints, and style of something I would wear but made for my kids. That’s how the brand was born! Saint Maddox also focuses on sustainability by using recycled fabrics and trims, in addition to only producing domestically, which helps our planet.

There is no right way to support women. There is no right way to be a mother. There is no right way to be a feminist. And suppose we, as women, really want to affect continual and lasting change for our daughters and their daughters. In that case, we may need to start supporting each other for real instead of one-upping and putting other women down to raise ourselves up.
